Forestry Technician (Fire)

This position is located in the Medford District in Medford, Oregon. The position serves as a lead wildland firefighter on wildland fire engines. The incumbent serves as the lead on a handcrew; locates firelines and directs crews in fireline construction, directs backfire and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling and mop up operations; constructs handlines, utilizes specialized tools, equipment and techniques to suppress fires; uses and performs maintenance on chainsaws and other fire suppression tools. Prior wildland firefighting experience on the fireline is a mandatory requirement of the position. Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work involves prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operations of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities. Office conditions require long periods of sitting, working with computers and general lifting, bending and reaching. Field conditions involve the employee being exposed to noise dust, heat, weather, aircraft turbulence and the hazards of firefighting such as heat, smoke and fie behavior. Specialized
Experience:
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-05) of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include leading crew members in specific fire suppression tasks and techniques, distributing work assignments to employees, conducting on-the-job training, coordinating fire suppression activities, performing hazardous fuel reduction projects, using fire hand tools and equipment to suppress fires OR one year of graduate level college education related to forestry technician work such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. This position is subject to the Interagency Fire Program (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a Lead Range Technician (Fire) (Handcrew). This position requires the following qualifications - Currency Not Required:
1) Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)2) Intermediate Fire Behavior (S-290) Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.Incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).This position requires at least 90 days of previous wildland firefighting experience. Protective clothing and equipment is required in hazardous environments. This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements. The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement.
