Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) are field-based representatives of the Medical and Scientific Affairs (MedSA) organization, responsible for interaction with clinicians, scientists, and medical institutions. MSLs employ scientific/clinical knowledge and expertise to facilitate appropriate scientific exchange, respond to unsolicited requests for medical information, and support clinical development initiatives with investigators, opinion leaders, and key Health Care Providers. MSLs provide support to and facilitate MedSA initiatives and programs in the areas of data generation, education, and the collection of professional scientific insights as directed by MedSA management, and in compliance with relevant laws, guidance and company policies.
Essential/Primary Duties, Functions and
Responsibilities:
o Identify key national and regional oncology thought leaders and function as the primary scientific contact between them and Onyx Pharmaceuticals: an Amgen subsidiary.
o Participate in the collection and exchange of scientific/technical information important to Onyx development efforts (serve as a field-based extension of the in-house clinical team).
o Assist in the management of relationships between key opinion leaders and corporate product teams.
o Identify competitive/scientific information to aid the clinical and Medical & Scientific Affairs teams in drug/brand development.
o Upon unsolicited request, share the submission process for investigator-sponsored studies. Facilitate applications with internal review personnel and teams
o Assist in the identification and evaluation of potential investigators for Onyx corporate trials when asked by Development.
o Assist the clinical trials team, as needed, in the support of and communication with investigators.
o Assist in the development of, and participate in, advisory boards and medical education programs as appropriate
o Contribute scientific and clinical expertise to the development and execution of appropriate educational activities.
o Provide appropriate clinical/scientific support for programs supporting sales, sales training and marketing efforts and professional services as directed by Medical & Scientific Affairs management
o Represent Onyx at major oncology meetings and conferences
o Maintain clinical and technical expertise in the therapeutic area through review of the scientific literature and attendance at key scientific meetings.
Basic Qualifications MD, PharmD, PhD, ND, NP, RPh, or PA
OR
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of medical science liaison experience
Preferred Qualifications Work
Experience:
o Extensive scientific or clinical education or experience, preferably in a discipline closely aligned with oncology, hematology or related therapeutic areas
o Previous MSL experience preferred (Without an advanced degree, 5
years related experience is required.)
o Consideration for industry experience in a related medical or scientific discipline will apply
o Patient care clinical experience in the therapeutic area (including sub-specialty) preferred
o Leadership experience (with direct reports or as an individual contributor) is a desirable trait
Functional/Technical Knowledge & Skills):
o Ability to efficiently manage time and priorities.
o Ability to cultivate and maintain appropriate, professional, scientific relationships with thought leaders and related institutions
o Functional/practical knowledge of study design and execution desired. Specific skills related to oncology clinical and/or laboratory trials, biostatistics, health economics or outcomes research strongly preferred.
o Understanding of adult learning principles and experience applying them preferred
o Critical thinking
Customer & Industry Knowledge:
o Solid understanding of drug development and product life-cycle development preferred.
o Strong pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry business acumen
o Working knowledge of the hematology or oncology therapeutic areas, key institutions, thought leaders strongly desired.
o Understanding of laws, regulations, and guidance relevant to modern Medical & Scientific Affairs practice.
Education/Training:
o Extensive scientific or clinical education or experience, preferably in a discipline closely aligned with oncology, hematology or related therapeutic areas
o 5
years of industry clinical or Medical Affairs experience
Other Requirements:
