The Communications Operator is responsible for operating the telephone communication center between the public and patients, physicians, and personnel. Typical duties may include answering a multi-line phone, taking messages and paging personnel, triaging emergency calls and routing them to appropriate personnel according to departmental and/or organizational policy. May also monitor or operate other communication and emergency systems.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education
Preferred: Associate's degree
Experience:
6 months related experience
Ability to maintain composure during high stress periods, and interact with a variety of personality types
Ability to deal effectively with all levels of staff, patients, and the general public
Strong communication skills - written and verbal
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workload in a high volume environment and maintain excellent customer service skills
Preferred: One year switchboard/communications operator experience in a fast-paced, stressful environment (large acute care facility, emergency services setting, etc.)
Preferred: Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel)
Preferred: Knowledge of Medical Terminology
Preferred: Bi-lingual (English & Spanish)
