Security Clearance/Background Investigation is required. Serves on District, inter-District and interagency teams to implement agency and inter-agency Manuals, Handbooks, and national policies related to fire management and fire ecology. Serves as the technical expert for fire ecology on the Interdisciplinary Team for the Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for Western Oregon. Coordinates District/field office review and implementation of existing, new and proposed State and National environmental laws and regulations related to forestry, rangeland, ecosystem health, and fire management for potential/projected resource management impacts. Provides results of these reviews to District staff, as well as to State Office Branch of Fire and Aviation Management and other State Office staffs, as appropriate. Duties include: Collects ecological data in ecosystems with an emphasis on fire's inherent and current role and expected effects. Requires intensive field sampling and sophisticated computerized data analysis. The information becomes part of the database used for indexing, inventorying, and mapping fire ecology information, and for making recommendations for re-establishing fire or it's simulated effects in fire-dependent ecosystems. Assists resource specialists with the determination and formulation of long-term and short term fire and fuel management objectives for the Medford District and has responsibility for integrating fire ecology into Land and Resource Management Plan implementation activities, including NEPA analysis. Assists in the development of practical criteria for evaluating current and desired management conditions and trends in ecosystems and participates in watershed analysis of vegetative trends and fire risks, identifying areas that are not in harmony with inherent distrubance regimes and suggesting solutions. The Fire Ecologist simplifies technology transfer to land managers by summarizing, in a useful way, fire ecology research. This is accomplished by obtaining results of fire ecology research through timely literature review, correspondence, personal contacts, attendance at professional meetings and symposia, and coordination with the fire research community. Provides sound professional judgement and scientific knowledge to solve problems and recommend solutions with alternatives. May be required to attend meetings of technical and scientific groups at the local or regional level where fire ecology and ecosystem management are discussed. KSA's:
1. Mastery of the concepts, principles and practices of fire ecology.
2. Knowledge of planning systems, including scoping processes, reviewing procedures for technical adequacy, public participation, decisions and monitoring.
3. Knowledge of related resource fields such as ecology, soils, wildlife, fisheries, mining, grazing and recreation in order to evaluate ecology effects from a broad perspective.
4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to develop and make project related presentations to diverse audiences.

For GS-401: Successful completion of a 4-year degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
For GS-408: Successful completion of a 4-year degree in biology or related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
OR Combination of education and
Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience Requirement: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-9 for the GS-11 level, and GS-11 for the GS-12 level) of the position to be filled.
Examples:
GS-12: Using knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, practices and methods of fire ecology as well as related resource fields such as soils, wildlife, fisheries, mining, grazing and recreation to review fire management issues for consistency with land management planning guidance and direction.
GS-11: Duties similar to those above but performed under closer supervision and with greater review of work products.
