The Diabetes Educator - RNprovides outpatient diabetes counseling in group or individual appointments in cooperation with the physician and dietitian. Coordinates the diabetes education survival skills needs for discharge for hospital inpatients with a primary or secondary diagnosis of diabetes that are referred by a physician or staff nurse. Acts as a resource for diabetes education and information for the medical community. Plans and participates in community education classes, diabetes related health fairs, and staff in-service programs
License / Certification:Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing and Basic Life Support (BLS) certified by American Heart Association required. Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) by National Certified Board for Diabetes Educators preferred. If not already certified, desire to obtain CDE certification within 3 years of hire and become a certified insulin pump trainer within2 years of hire is preferred.
Experience:Minimum of two years current clinical experience as an RN required. Must have had inpatient experience if not CDE. Competent in use of MS Word, Outlook email required with knowledge of PowerPoint preferred. Recent diabetes related clinical experience or current inpatient medical/surgical experience preferred. Experience teaching adults in small groups and one-on-one preferred. Must have the ability to maintain a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and compassion when working with patients, families and co-workers. Must work collaboratively and co-operatively with comprehensive health care team
